So I must admit that I cried as we drove away from the cousins…. It was sooo nice to be with them and get to know them. Their hospitality and their home were wonderful. The drive to Council Grove was pleasant enough but the rest of the day was highway and hot. We saw the Kansas we thought we’d see up North. Flat, hot and not much change in the landscape. The plus side was that there were lots of old barns and buildings that I was able to get pictures of on the fly. (I love old barns and houses) We were pretty road weary when we reached the hotel in South Hutchinson. We had a nice swim and then planned our route for the next day.
Here are some pictures that highlight the day:
Day 6: We woke up to rain! What there was no rain in the forecast… it cleared up by the time we left and was up to 72 degrees. An hour later it was 82 degrees. A half an hour after that we hit Dodge City and it was 94 degrees. At that point I told Max to stop telling me what the temperature was. I know it got over 100 at some point during the day.
We stopped in the town of Kinsley which is exactly equal distance from NY City and San Francisco. We toured the Sod Museum which housed a true sod house. The one they had was said to be over large and that was about 650 square feet. Wow!! No wonder they got cabin Fever.
We had a nice steak lunch in Dodge City and toured the Boot Hill Museum which is home of Boot Hill Cemetery and an exact replica of Dodge City’s original main street and it’s buildings. That was interesting and enjoyable. They have shows there in the evening but we did not hang around for anything like that.
On the road again to Lamar, CO for the night. It was HOT!! then we got stuck in road construction twice. Max and I have come to the conclusion that Kansas people don’t understand the concept of “keep right except to pass” and that texting and driving don’t mix!
The heat can really take it out of you but we made it to Lamar and got checked into our hotel. We had a quiet dinner and now we’re sitting outside the Hotel’s guest laundry washing some clothes. We are 1 day ahead of schedule so we decided to take our favorite route home tomorrow through Decker – Conifer and home by way of Golden and CO287. It will be nice to be in the mountains again.
Here are the pictures from today.
I think the words on the boot hill grave marker are hilarious. It reads: Edward Hurley shot January 17, 1873 He drank too much and loved unwisely.
